Curbside Pickup
Curbside pickup for Chaplin is done by Willimantic Waste Paper Company, Inc. Rolling trash & recyclable carts (you must use the carts that are provided) are picked up EVERY Thursday throughout Chaplin, except during weeks where there is a holiday, in which case it is picked up on Friday. They must be placed curbside by 6:00am on the day of pickup. For additional common Q&A please Click Here.
Trash carts are normally 95 gallon (44" H x 34" L x 25" W). If you have difficulty moving this size cart, you can request a smaller 65-gallon one instead. All trash in the carts must be in bags, and carts should be placed 18" from the edge of the road.

Recycling
Beginning in July, 2009, each household was provided with a blue 65 gallon cart in which to put all recyclable items. There is no longer any need to separate paper and cardboard from cans and bottles. All recyclables can be combined in the blue container. The old rectangular recycle containers can be recycled or are yours to use as you wish. Click Here to view additional Single Stream Recycling Information.

Following this new procedure carefully is not only healthier for the environment; it also can result in savings of $8,000 or more per year for the Town. The Town of Chaplin pays roughly $60,000 a year for trash disposal of some 800 tons. Effective July 1, the Town will be paid at least $5 per ton for all recyclables, while the cost of trash is $72 a ton. Accordingly, this is what's called a win-win type of solution. It definitely does pay for us to recycle.

Hazardous Waste
The majority of Chaplin's trash is incinerated at one of Connecticut's three trash incinerators. Toxic chemicals such as mercury, lead, cadmium & brominated fire retardants can potentially pollute the air during the incineration process, or the soil and water where the ash residue is land filled. Half of Connecticut's mercury pollution comes from our trash incinerators!
Most hazardous waste should be taken to the MidNEROC Chemical Waste Facility in Willington.
This includes the following items:
Cell Phones*
Acids
Caustics
Fluorescent Bulbs (tubes and compact fluorescent)**
Household Cleaners
Paints (oil-based, lead)
Pesticides Rechargeable Batteries*
(alkaline batteries can go in household trash)
Solvents
*Rechargeable batteries and cell phones may also be recycled at no cost at many retailers, including Home Depot, Staples, Radio Shack, Best Buy, Whole Foods Market, & Ikea.
**Fluorescent bulbs may also be recycled at no cost at Home Depot, Ace Hardware & Ikea.

Composting
This practice is also a way of reducing waste while, at the same time, creating a product useful as a garden mulch, soil amendment, or potting mix. Fruit and vegetable peels, cores or rinds and other non- animal kitchen scraps can be combined with grass clippings, leaves, weeds & other biodegradable materials to make this product. Much information is generally available on the best methods of establishing a compost area. A useful website to visit is www.compostinfo.com.
