With the July 2012 tax collecting period fast approaching, I am writing to bring you all up to date on some positive and exciting changes in the Town of Chaplin’s Tax Department.

In December of 2011, the Town of Chaplin changed the Tax Collector’s office hours from four days a week to two days a week. The Tax Collector’s new office hours are Tuesdays from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM and Thursdays from 9 AM to 3:00 PM for business that needs to be conducted with the Tax Collector in person, such as needing a motor vehicle release. Payment receipts may be printed from the website once your payment has been posted.

To pay your taxes, the following methods are now available for your convenience:

Ø   To pay your taxes on the days the tax office is closed, which are Mondays and Wednesdays and the Town Hall is open, there is a secure locked drop box located in the Town Hall at the Town Clerk’s counter.  Envelopes are provided and you may simply put your tax payment in the lock box which will be opened and collected for deposit by the Tax Collector the next business day.  Payment receipts for drop box payments are mailed upon request or you may print a receipt from the website once you payment has been posted.  Motor vehicle releases may be obtained in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

No Cash Payments are accepted in the lock box – Checks Only Please.

Ø  The town now offers the taxpayer pay- on- line options by going to the town’s website at:  http://www.chaplinct.org/ .  From the pull down menu under departments, click on taxes and then click on “Click here to view your tax bill or to pay your taxes on line”.  You have the option of paying with your credit card but will be charged a fee of 3.2% plus 50 cents per transaction of your total bill.  If you pay with your debit card, you will be charged fee of 3.2% plus 50 cents per transaction.  If you chose to do an ACH transfer, you will be charged a flat fee of $2.50 per transaction. You may print your own receipt once your payment is posted.  Please be aware that ACH transfers can take three to five days to appear on the tax collector’s system.  However, the effective posting date will be the day you made the on-line transaction.

Ø   The good old method of mailing your taxes is also an option. There has been some confusion with our mailing address since Chaplin mail deliveries were moved to the Willimantic Post Office.  Please address tax payments to:  Town of Chaplin Tax Collector, 495 Phoenixville Road, Chaplin, CT 06235. Please do NOT use our old post office box number or your mail will be returned to you.
